Scout Report: Exploring Opportunities in Eswatini

After the recent Joseph Summit in Kazakhstan, AgGrandize Board Chairman Kevin Stark traveled to Eswatini on a scouting trip to explore agricultural development work in this small, newly-renamed African nation.

Hosted by the Nazarene Church, Kevin and the team experienced remarkable hospitality and visited ag programs, orphanages, and shelters.

“We were able to formulate a plan with the church and college there that will hopefully help improve on their agricultural work,” Kevin shared.

While the trip focused on agriculture, it quickly became clear that the needs—and the hope—of Eswatini extend beyond farming. Kevin and his hosts visited an orphanage where the team encountered deeply moving stories of children who had suffered neglect, abandonment, and abuse.

“We encountered some heavy stuff on the trip, particularly an orphanage and stories of neglected children; kids who’d been tossed in latrines, left on doorsteps, injured, and abused,” Kevin recalled. “Yet we also saw how, with assistance, they were brought up with opportunities despite what they’d endured...it’s gut-wrenching to think of the hurt and pain they endured, but encouraging to see who they’re becoming despite all that.”

The trip reinforced both the challenges and the possibilities in Eswatini. While the country faces profound struggles, there is also resilience, compassion, and a vision for sustainable growth.

AgGrandize is eager to explore ways we can partner with the Nazarene Church and local leaders to strengthen agricultural development and contribute to the broader work of restoration and hope.

“It was great working with the local people there and seeing their intense compassion for their neighbors,” Kevin said.
