Farmer First: George from Georgia

Happy Farmer First! At the beginning of every month, we introduce you to a farmer we’ve encountered on trips around the world, and this month’s farmer is George from the Republic of Georgia.

Situated in the crossroads of continents, Georgia boasts a variety of climates and a deep history with farming. Stoic and quiet, George welcomed out team and gestured to the planting happening over his shoulder. As we visited several fields, he asked our mentors questions about crop varieties and effective herbicides while sharing insights of his own.

“We have a lot of stones in our soil, it’s just so rocky here, but the soil is also rich and full of potential.”
—George

On a recent visit, farmers all over Georgia shared their concerns over the war in Ukraine. One farmer explained, “Our border with Russia has changed a lot throughout history, they envy our farmland and would rather just annex it than buy from us.”

Yet despite that uncertainty, people like George still head out to the fields every day, still plant in faith that they’ll see a harvest, and were kind enough to take time out for tea and discussion with us.
